SUMMARY:Politics\, Dialogue and the Evolution of Democracy: How to Discuss Difficult\, Contentious and Other Hot Political Topics - Session 1 of 2
DESCRIPTION:We are in the midst of a global political crisis\, filled with hostility\, hatred and personal attacks\, and half the people won’t talk to the other half. The problem is\, we haven’t figured out yet how to talk to each other about political ideas and beliefs\, or discuss our disagreements in ways that might lead to learning\, win/win outcomes\, increased empathy\, mutual understanding and joint problem solving. Yet we are all citizens of the same countries and care about their future. \nJoin Ken Cloke as he probes and discusses such tough and timely questions such as: How\, then\, do we talk to each other about difficult and dangerous issues? How do we exercise our responsibility as citizens without losing what we’ve learned as mediators\, negotiators and conflict resolvers? How do we advocate for what we believe in without becoming biased and adversarial? What is an interest-based form of political discourse? What higher order skills do we require for democracy to work? How do we conduct meaningful discussions of highly contentious\, values-based topics without degenerating into pointless diatribes? How do we respond democratically and humanely to authoritarian and inhumane actions? How do we build trust between adversaries in difficult circumstances where time is limited\, history is long and positions have hardened? Are we slipping into fascism\, how can we know\, and if we are\, what do we do about it as mediators? So many questions\, so few answers. \nClick here and scroll down to register

SUMMARY:The Neuroscience of Conflict - Session 1 of 2
DESCRIPTION:This course will focus on social neuroscience to help understand human behavior in conflict. Our brain\, as a network of billions of pulsating neurons\, does not operate in social isolation. Join BRDGES for an interactive journey through the cutting-edge research of neuroscience from molecular to social\, learning more about how our brain operates\, how the different structures of the single brain are interconnected and how they relate to other parts of our body. The course will discuss the process within the organism in conflict situations\, and how it impacts us as human beings — the way we feel\, think and interact. While discussing the collective reality\, the course also will analyze individual behavior in the heat of a conflict to assist in one’s daily conflict resolution practice. We approach this complex topic with humor\, through examples and short stories connecting the past\, the present and the future. \nClick here and scroll down to register

SUMMARY:Mindfulness in the Heat of Conflict: Being Clear and Calm - Second Spring Course - Session 1 of 2
DESCRIPTION:Being mindful gives conflict resolution practitioners (mediators\, negotiators\, facilitators\, coaches\, attorneys\, arbitrator\, human resource personnel\, and psychologists – to name a few) the opportunity to respond skillfully to whatever is arising in the moment\, even in the heat of conflict. To strengthen your ability to be mindful at work and play\, you will be introduced to mindfulness meditation. This 4-hour course increases mental acuity and focus\, promotes freedom from habitual judgments and reactions\, builds our capacity to be fully present in the moment\, lowers stress and promotes clarity and calmness. This highly successful in-person course now moves to the global classroom where virtually anyone anywhere with a computer can learn to pay focused\, non-judgment attention to experiences as they unfold. By participating in a series of enjoyable exercises and conflict-related role-plays\, you will be introduced to two practical tools of awareness\, STOPSI© and Taking STOCK©\, co-created by Wohl and Leonard L. Riskin\, which help integrate mindfulness into our conflict resolution work and home lives. \nClick here and scroll down to register
